Abstract Detail: Search Strategies: Classical to Modern Approaches
(Artificial Intelligence through Search)

Almost all Artificial Intelligence (AI) programs perform some form of
“problem solving” whether it be interpreting a visual scene, scheduling
time tables, playing chess or planning a sequence of robot actions.  For
many complex problems one needs to find out a good solution from among a
set of possible solutions; and hence some “search” strategy is required
to obtain this solution in a reasonable time. The complexity increases
when the system does not have any background (domain) knowledge about
the problem.   Further, even if the problem is solved, the solution,
thus found, may not necessarily be the global optimum (best) one --- may
be a local/near-optimal too.

Search procedures may be blind (uninformed) or heuristic based
(informed); it can be based on state space graph or others.  Search can
also be viewed as an optimization process. Various performance measuring
indices exist to evaluate the quality of search strategies.
In this series of lectures, initially some classical blind (like BFS,
DFS) and informed search (like A*) techniques will be discussed keeping
in mind their evaluation aspects. This will be followed by some modern
search and optimization methods which are iterative too (e.g., Hill
Climbing, Simulated Annealing). In the next part, focus will be given on
Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs), an iterative multi-solution based
meta-heuristic search and optimization strategy, evolved based on
natural systems. Finally, utility of EAs for solving some real life
problems will be discussed.


*Biography*
_Ashish Ghosh_
Ashish Ghosh is a Professor at the Machine Intelligence Unit, Indian
Statistical Institute. He has already published more than 170 research
papers in internationally reputed journals and refereed conferences, and
has edited eight books. His current research interests include pattern
recognition and machine learning, data mining, big data analysis, image
analysis, remotely sensed image analysis, video image analysis, soft
computing, fuzzy sets and uncertainty analysis, neural networks,
evolutionary computation, and bioinformatics.
Dr. Ghosh received the prestigious and most coveted Young Scientists
Award in Engineering Sciences from the Indian National Science Academy
in 1995, and in Computer Science
from the Indian Science Congress Association in 1992. He was selected as
an Associate of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, India, in
1997. He is a member of the founding team that established the National
Center for Soft Computing Research at the Indian Statistical Institute,
Kolkata, in 2004, with funding from the Department of Science and
Technology, Government of India, and is currently the In-charge of the
Center. He is acting as a member of the editorial boards of various
international journals.

_Susmita Ghosh_
Susmita Ghosh received the B.Sc. (with Honors) in Physics and the
B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of
Calcutta, India, in 1988 and 1991, respectively, the M.Tech. in Computer
Science and Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay,
in 1993, and the Ph.D. (Engineering) from Jadavpur University, Kolkata,
in 2004. She
has visited various universities/academic institutes for collaborative
research/ international projects and delivered lectures in different
countries including Australia, China, Italy, Japan and the USA.  She has
published many research papers in internationally reputed journals and
referred conferences and has edited 3 books.   She was the Principal
Investigator of several research projects (including India Trento
Programme for Advanced Research) funded by government agencies of
National/ International repute (including India Trento Programme for
Advanced Research). Presently, she is a Local Coordinator of two Erasmus
Mundus (funded by European Union) Projects.
Susmita Ghosh was a Lecturer and then an Associate Professor with the
Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Jadavpur University
since 1997. She is currently a Full Professor at the same department.
Her research interests include genetic algorithms, neural networks,
image processing, pattern recognition, soft computing, bioinformatics and
remotely sensed image analysis.
